Why Do Finnish Babies Sleep in Cardboard Boxes?
Since the 1930s, when the infant mortality rate in Finland was sky high, the Finnish government has been issuing maternity boxes to all of their pregnant citizens. These Finnish Baby Boxes include a traditional, stylish baby box (the designs change from year to year) – which is essentially a cardboard box with a mattress, filled with all of a mother’s newborn needs, from diapers to baby clothes to toys to books to burp clothes to swaddling clothes.
Finnish baby boxes have decreased infant mortality so much that Finland now has one of the lowest rates of infant deaths in the entire world. In fact, they are rated #4 in lowest infant mortality, whereas the United States is ranked at #145.
